Read, Understand, and Grow Step by Step

Welcome to the English Reading for Beginners section of 1000 Days Speaking English.

When we read regularly, we meet new words, useful sentence patterns, and natural ways of expressing ideas.

However, reading does not mean trying to understand every word immediately. In the beginning, it is normal to feel confused. The important thing is to choose the right material and read in the right way.

In this section, we will read simple English texts about daily life: family, food, work, hobbies, travel, health, feelings, and personal goals. These are familiar topics, so you can connect English with your real life.

Learn with English and Vietnamese Subtitles

I especially enjoy reading texts with both English and Vietnamese subtitles.

First, read the English paragraph slowly. Try to understand the general meaning before looking at the Vietnamese translation. You do not need to stop at every new word.

Then, read the Vietnamese subtitle to check your understanding. This helps you understand the message clearly and avoid guessing the wrong meaning.

After that, read the English again. This time, notice how English expresses the same idea differently from Vietnamese.

For example:

I usually make a cup of coffee before I start studying.

Tôi thường pha một cốc cà phê trước khi bắt đầu học.

This is a simple sentence, but it gives us useful daily-life vocabulary:

usually = thường
make a cup of coffee = pha một cốc cà phê
before = trước khi
start studying = bắt đầu học

Small sentences like this are the foundation for speaking and writing naturally.

Read for Meaning First

When you read a new text, do not try to translate every single word. First, ask yourself:

What is this text mainly about?
Who is speaking?
What happened?
How does the person feel?
What can I learn from this text?

Understanding the main idea is more important than understanding every detail. When you know the general meaning, new words become easier to remember.

Learn Useful Words and Phrases

Do not collect too many new words in one reading session. Choose only five to ten useful words or phrases that you can use in your own life.

For example, after reading a text about a daily routine, you may learn:

get up early
have breakfast
go to work
take a short break
spend time with my family
go to bed late

These are not difficult words, but they are very useful. You can use them in your speaking, writing, and everyday conversations.

I believe it is better to learn a small number of useful phrases deeply than to memorize many words and forget them quickly.

Read, Repeat, and Use

After reading a paragraph, read it aloud two or three times. This helps you connect reading with listening and speaking.

Then, try to change the details and make the sentences personal.

The text says: “She goes for a walk after dinner.”

You can say:

I study English after dinner.
My father watches TV after dinner.
My family often talks together after dinner.

In this way, one simple sentence can become many useful sentences for your real life.

Read the Same Text Again

Reading a text only once is not enough. The first time, you understand the main idea. The second time, you notice vocabulary and grammar. The third time, you can read more naturally and confidently.

Do not be afraid of repetition. Repeating familiar texts helps you build a strong foundation. When basic sentence patterns become automatic, you can understand more difficult texts later.

A good reading habit can be simple:

Read one short text.
Understand the main idea.
Check the Vietnamese subtitle.
Choose useful words and phrases.
Read aloud.
Use the sentences in your own life.
Review the text again after a few days.
